BMW automobile sales up almost 8 per cent, BMW motorcycle sales up 20 per cent over last year Munich, Germany. August 21, 2000…Deliveries of BMW automobiles in the first 7 months of the year 2000 amounted to almost 488,000 units worldwide, equaling an increase by 7.7 per cent over the same period last year (453,000). In July alone, BMW car sales amounted to almost 67,000 units, 1.5 per cent more than in July 1999 (66,000 units). This positive development was fueled in particular by the BMW 3 Series, with deliveries reaching approximately 304,700 units by the end of July. This equals an increase of 13.5 per cent over the same period last year (268,500). In July alone worldwide sales of the BMW 3 Series amounted to approximately 42,600 units, equivalent to an increase of 8.2 per cent over July 1999. In Germany, deliveries of BMW automobiles to customers amounted to approximately 150,400 units as of July, exceeding the previous year’s figure slightly by 0.4 per cent. And while the significant downward trend in the overall German market continued in July with a decrease in deliveries by 19 per cent, BMW deliveries, at 21,040 units, were down by a relatively small margin of 3.7 per cent. Even this slight drop in deliveries is attributable primarily to the limited availability of BMW’s latest models such as the X5, the 3 Series sport wagon, and the various diesel models. The volume of orders received in Germany was significantly higher than in the corresponding periods last year, both in the month of July as such and throughout the entire year up to July. This positive BMW performance versus the overall German market has boosted BMW’s market share in the first 7 months to 7.0 per cent (1999: 6.3 per cent), with the Company’s market share in July even reaching 7.4 per cent. Growth has been significant in the diesel market, BMW’s volume in this segment increasing overproportionally as of July by 63 per cent to 45,400 units (versus overall market growth of the diesel segment of 17.3 per cent). Accordingly, BMW’s market share in the diesel segment is up to 7.7 per cent (previous year: 5.6 per cent). On an international level, BMW’s success is borne out in particular by the following markets: In Western Europe, where BMW cars showed an increase in deliveries by 12.7 per cent to 124,700 units (previous year: 110,700), deliveries were above-average in Spain (17,479) at 26.1 per cent, Sweden (4,322) at 21.8 per cent, and Belgium (12,916) at 21.1 per cent. In the American Sales Region the highest growth rates were recorded in Mexico (1,633 units) at 41.3 per cent, Canada (6,255) at 21.9 per cent, and the USA (103,951) at 13.7 per cent. In Eastern Europe and Asia the highest growth rates were observed in Russia (528 units) at 138.9 per cent, South Korea (870) at 124.2 per cent, and China (1,937) at 68.7 per cent. In South Africa, deliveries of BMW cars were up by 22 per cent to 10,030 units. Deliveries of BMW motorcycles in the first 7 months of the year 2000 amounted to approximately 53,000 units worldwide, again a new record and an increase over the previous year by 20 per cent. In July 2000 alone BMW motorcycle deliveries to customers accounted for approximately 7,500 motorcycles worldwide, making this month the best July ever in the history of the Company. In Germany deliveries of BMW motorcycles from January to July amounted to 18,000 units (an increase by 15 per cent over the same period last year, although the overall motorcycle market in Germany was down significantly). In July alone deliveries of BMW motorcycles to customers in Germany were approximately 2,000 units (an increase of 8 per cent over July 1999). BMW’s best-selling motorcycle once again was the big GS Boxer. The R 1150 GS, launched in 1999, in turn was sold to almost 11,000 customers from January — July 2000. The new, «small» single-cylinder GS, the F 650 GS, has also proved extremely successful ever since its launch this spring, with worldwide sales from January — July 2000 amounting to almost 9,000 units. Germany remains the No. 1 market for BMW motorcycle sales, accounting for a total volume from January — July of 18,000 units and with sales of 2,000 units in July alone. The Company’s second- and third-largest motorcycle markets are Italy (7,710 or, respectively 1,120 units) and the USA (7.300 or, respectively, 1,250 units).
